De Wever had planned to present Modi with a Neuhaus chocolate sculpture of India Gate, inscribed to honor the sacrifices of Indian soldiers during World War I and other conflicts. The gift was intended to symbolize the shared history between Belgium and India linked to Flanders Fields.
The Belgian embassy shared photos showing the damaged chocolate sculpture and said a replacement would be provided next time.
During his first visit to India in 20 years, De Wever joked that chocolate suits diplomacy but not travel. He also praised Modi as a wise leader while calling for deeper ties between Belgium and India in defense, trade and green energy.
The broken chocolate sculpture added an unexpected moment to a visit centered on strengthening bilateral relations, while the planned India Gate tribute underscored the historical connection represented by the gift.
